Women-Owned Business Spotlight: Leelee’s Garden

At Heyday Homes, we’re passionate about supporting female entrepreneurs and small businesses. Our spotlight series aims to introduce clients, family, and friends to local businesses in the area in effort to build community. We hope you enjoy this interview and learning about Leeann’s work as much we have!

Name: Leann Dameron, Owner of LeeLee’s Garden

What inspired you to start your business?

It was a mix of pursuing my budding interest in plants and an ah-hah flash moment of inspiration.

In my early twenties I had a corporate job and managed a large team. I had a lot of anxiety and found myself spending my weekends at the Chicago Botanic Garden to unwind. Eventually I completed my master gardener certification and a volunteer internship. As I got more involved in plants, I got a flash image of a place I wanted to create: Leelee’s Garden, a botanical paradise filled with workshops, plants and flowers.

That vision inspired me to take night classes in horticulture, floral design and landscape design. I eventually left my job and started teaching workshops like terrarium making and basic floral design. I haven’t created that location I envisioned years ago (we have plans for it this year though!), but I like to think we spread that feeling of Leelee’s Garden, full of plants and flowers, wherever we go (and ship).

How did you market your business when it was brand new?

I was lucky that my concept came at the same time as the rise in interest in experiences. I marketed my events on Dabble, a local company, Eventbrite, and other experience platforms. By connecting to these platforms with larger lists than I had, early on I was able to sell out a lot of my events.

What do you like most about owning and running your own business?

I like the variety in my days, getting to own my own schedule, and most importantly, I still love being surrounded by plants and flowers.

What is your top challenge as a business owner?

Trying to do it all myself or getting maxed out on events and burning out. Floral design and pop-up events are a very physical business and I know of a lot of florists who struggle with this. I’m always working to find my right business rhythm.

Do you have any advice you would give to others starting a business?

Just try it. Again and again, until you find something that clicks. Listen to your gut as much or more than business advice you get from others.

Just for fun…

What is your favorite thing about your neighborhood?

We just bought a property and moved from Avondale to Albany Park. I love the restaurants and access to more of the north side, which I’m eager to explore.

What is your morning routine?

I am a big believer in Julia Cameron’s morning pages. I write those every day with a cup of tea and my terrier laying next to me.

3 Words that define your design style?

Wild, eclectic, old soul
