At Home With: Sarah Montgomery
Join us for a home tour and creative conversation with Sarah Montgomery.
With a background in set design and prop mastery, Sarah Montgomery is used to creating transformative worlds. She also spent time in luxury product design for leading brands, while traveling the globe connecting with the top bespoke artisans and manufacturers. Now, luckily for us, she has taken all of her knowledge and experience to create Sarah Montgomery Interiors.
We were curious about Sarah’s space, so we invited ourselves over to chat with our whimsical design queen.
We had the privilege of touring Sarah’s home and asked about her favorite pieces in her home.
What are your favorite pieces in your home?
“All of them have a story, but I would probably say the wallpaper in the dining room. I've never done a whole room with wallpaper in my own space. Definitely a splurge and feels really, really special. And just all the sort of treasures I've thrifted throughout the years. We still have the vintage charm, but we definitely updated the vibe.”
How do you successfully layer the old and new in your home + your client’s homes?
“We primarily work in historic homes and we carefully incorporate modern and mid-century pieces like art, decor and lighting with more classic pieces. Fabrics are another way we mix style in a space. Sometimes it is the juxtaposition between two pieces of different styles that creates the design. While each piece is carefully selected it's more about the mix and layers we create. Our projects often last more than a year so we really get to know the clients and what makes them tick. We can always be on the lookout for the special piece that really resonates. We love for there to be a few items that really stop people in their tracks and have them ask, "Is that a...?" Interior design in the luxury market can often feel too serious! We strive to incorporate a touch of humor and whimsy in every project.”
How do you make your space feel like home?
“I always incorporate vintage and antique art and decor into my projects as well as my own home. These pieces bring interest, patina and soul to a space, making the space feel loved and lived in. If you're on the lookout for pieces at thrift stores and while traveling and you find something that appeals to you, you should go for it! Even if it feels random, the thrill of the hunt can often bring meaning and memory. We design with a mix of styles and often use art and accessories to tie it all together. I never want my spaces to feel like a designer waved their wand, I want them to look layered and personal with room to grow.”
