Name: Ashely Harding, Owner of Vintage Refined

What inspired you to start your business?

I knew the current industry I was in (Finance) wasn’t something I aspired to do forever but I didn’t know what direction I wanted to take. Around that time, my husband and I purchased on old house in WI that we were renovating. I absolutely loved the renovation process and the idea of restoring something old. It was through this process that I realized how much I loved design and valued maintaining the integrity of older things.

How did you market your business when it was brand new?

When I started, IG wasn’t as powerful as it is today. I relied heavily on Etsy, which proved to be a great platform for reaching a large group of people. I also wrote weekly blog posts to help bring awareness to what I was doing.

What do you like most about owning and running your own business?

While there are a lot of aspects I love about owning my own business, I think the thing that brings me the most joy is the pride I have in knowing I’ve created something unique and special. While I may work much more now than when I was in corporate America, it never feels like work. I take great pride in owning a reputable company and am always striving to improve it.

What is your top challenge as a business owner?

Delegation. I still like to be involved in all aspects of the business and often find myself falling into the trap of trying to do it all. I know where I am most effective and know the business would grow quicker if I only focused on key areas and outsourced others, however I also don’t ever want to compromise quality or customer relationships. This is a challenge I hope to improve on this year.

Do you have any advice you would give to others starting a business?

Write a business plan. However, know that it can (and probably will) change. Be flexible and nimble. If something isn’t working, explore other options. Own your mistakes and learn from them. Know that every day is different, and you’ll be faced with new challenges. Learning to overcome these uncertainties not only make you a better business owner, but a more confident individual. Constantly push yourself. Surround yourself with positive, hard-working people. Have fun!

Just for fun…

What is your favorite thing about your neighborhood?

I love the convenience and familiarity of our neighborhood. I value being able to walk to my favorite restaurants, parks and shops. We have our regular spots, and when we visit, they know us by name. Having these connections brings a sense of community.

What is your morning routine?

Mornings are usually a mad rush at our house as we scramble to get everyone ready for school & work. However, each morning starts with me consuming a full French Press of coffee. I prefer to work out in the mornings, as this helps set the tone for the rest of the day.

3 Words that define your design style?

Traditional with a twist – I love a classic style, but nothing too stuffy. I’m a believer of pulling in pieces from all eras and origins. Blue & white, animal print and chinoiserie are common themes throughout my house.
