Wicker Park Buyers: Meet Caity & Noah

Couple sitting in kitchen.

How did you know this home was “the one”?

We were looking for a home with good bones and good value. When we saw this one we knew it needed some cosmetic love, but it was the perfect size and location.

Why did you decide it was time to stop renting and buy your first place?

We saw ourselves staying downtown for a few years, and we knew we could get more for our money buying vs. renting.

Did your criteria for your home change as your search progressed?

Yes. We realized we really needed assigned parking in Chicago, and then that quickly evolved to garage parking! We got extra lucky with an attached, heated garage, and we’ve been especially loving it when it snows.

Have you made any changes since you’ve moved in?

We've given it a major cosmetic upgrade. We painted all the walls and trims, and we modernized all canned lighting throughout the unit. In the kitchen we replaced countertops, backsplash, light fixtures and sink fixtures, as well as painted the cabinets. We completely renovated 2 of our 3 bathrooms, including painted cabinets, new countertops, mirrors, tiling, light fixtures.

What is your favorite neighborhood spot?

We love Sea & Olive on Division. Even the walk there is great - you pass so many cute coffee shops, boutiques and restaurants.

Favorite memory in your new home?

We love hosting people in our home for weekend visits, book club, dinners, etc. One summer night we hosted 6 friends in town for a wedding, and we all sat out on our back deck listening to music and having a nightcap. It’s the best feeling to have your space filled with people you love.

Do you have any advice for other first-time home buyers?

Figure out your must-haves vs. nice-to-haves ahead of time. Each home comes with compromises, so knowing your priorities will make your decisions easier.

Meg never gave up on us, even when we were ready to give up on the process! Buying in the peak of the market is exciting but also stressful because there’s a ton of pressure to move fast. Meg was a wonderful guide for us. We especially appreciated her perspective on elements of the home we could change (ugly cabinets) vs. ones we couldn’t (layout), and what the implications for us would be. I feel very confident that with her stamp of approval, we made a smart decision.
