Roscoe Village First-time Home Buyers: Meet Carolyn & Greg

Why did you choose the Roscoe Village neighborhood?

We met while both living in the Lakeview area around 6 years ago, so we knew that when it came time to move back to Chicago, that we wanted to be back on the North Side. Roscoe Village in particular has a low key, family-friendly neighborhood vibe to it which we both loved, too.

What are you most excited about in your new home?

We love that over the past two years we have been able to make a few updates that have really helped make it feel like home. Our updated bathroom with new bathtub/walk-in shower are the most exciting for us as this project just finished. We also love that there is a wood-burning fireplace and a spacious feel to the condo even though it’s only one story.

What is your new favorite neighborhood spot?

Roscoe Village has so many great spots to offer! One of our favorite restaurants this year became John’s Place with its outdoor seating and neighborly feel. We loved to walk over to Village Tap and Roscoe Village Pub for a beer on their patios on a nice day. Also, walks to and around Hamlin Park which is only a block away has helped to keep us sane this year.

How would you describe your style?

Cozy eclectic? This question always stumps me! We have a lot of vintage pieces that have been handed down through the family, so I love a good mix of old and new with a lot of warm neutrals mixed in!

How did you decide on this place?

Meg really helped us narrow down our search in a short amount of time! This condo in particular stuck out to us because of the location, more spacious layout, and the potential to really make it our own with a few updates.

Do you plan to do any other updates on your place?

We’re proud to say that in the two years we’ve lived here, we’ve now completed all of our large renovation projects! We started in the kitchen by painting the cabinets, replacing hardware, and adding a tile backsplash, and then tackled both of our bathrooms with complete updates (BIG thanks to Meg’s contractor that she’d put us in touch with! They were phenomenal.) Other than a few other cosmetic updates like updating the fireplace surround and adding new paint/trim to some of the rooms, we’re done with the big stuff!

What was a must-have in your home?

A couple of our non-negotiables were an attached garage and elevator, both of which have been invaluable during our time living here so far, especially in the winter! Aside from this, we were drawn to the wider, more spacious layout, lots of big windows and sliding glass doors, and front and back balconies for an outdoor escape.

Favorite memory in your new home?

This year some of our favorite memories from this year include cozying up by the fire on a snowy/rainy day, reading and sipping on cocktails on our quiet back balcony when the weather was nice, and going for “nature walks” around the buzzing Roscoe Village area. Hopefully next year we can have more memories of walking to Cubs games and going to shows at some of the many local concert venues.

Meg was amazing to work with! We had a short window to look for places around the holidays as we were moving from out-of-state, and she was there every step of the way with us. She’d even gone out of her way to drive us around to a number of places that matched our criteria, provided valuable insight into the market that we wouldn’t have known otherwise, and used her great eye for design to point out areas that would need fixing up to give us back the most return on our investment.
